Just Tell Me
What is Bluetooth?
A plain-English explanation of Bluetooth, pairing and how nearby devices talk to each other.
The short answer
Bluetooth lets two devices that are close to each other communicate wirelessly.
It’s what lets your phone send sound to your wireless headphones, connect to your car or talk to a portable speaker — without plugging in a cable.
Think of it like this
Remember two tin cans tied together with string?
Think of Bluetooth like that — only the string is invisible.
Your phone is one tin can. Your headphones, car, speaker, smartwatch or hearing aids are the other.
Before they can talk, you usually need to introduce them to each other. That’s called pairing.
Once they’re paired, they’ll often remember each other and reconnect automatically the next time they’re nearby.
No actual tin cans required.
A little more, if you want it
Bluetooth is designed for devices that are reasonably close together.
Unlike Wi-Fi, it doesn’t normally connect you to the internet. It’s mainly a way for devices to communicate directly with one another.
That’s why you can listen to music you’ve downloaded to Bluetooth headphones even when you don’t have internet access.
You’ll find Bluetooth in all sorts of things:
- Wireless headphones and earbuds
- Cars
- Portable speakers
- Smartwatches and fitness trackers
- Hearing aids
- Keyboards and computer mice
- Some medical and health devices
When you see the Bluetooth symbol in your phone or computer settings, it’s simply telling you that Bluetooth is available or switched on.
Good to know
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi aren’t the same thing.
Wi-Fi usually connects your device to a network and often to the internet. Bluetooth usually connects one nearby device to another.
And no — simply having Bluetooth switched on doesn’t mean it’s chewing through your mobile data.
If something won’t connect, don’t assume you’ve broken it. Bluetooth devices occasionally seem to have the emotional stability of a toddler who’s missed a nap.
Turning Bluetooth off and back on again genuinely fixes quite a few problems.
